Finding Comfort in Expression

In hospice care, not everything that needs to be felt can be put into words. There are moments when emotions feel too big, too complex, or too quiet to explain. In those spaces, expressive therapies can offer another way to process, connect, and find comfort. Music, art, and connection with animals create gentle pathways for expression. They don’t require the “right” words or a certain way of feeling. They simply invite you to show up as you are.

Music can reach places that conversation sometimes cannot. A familiar song may bring back memories, create a sense of calm, or allow for emotional release. Whether it’s listening quietly, singing along, or simply having music present in the background, it can help regulate the nervous system and create a sense of connection.

Art offers a similar kind of freedom. You don’t have to be an artist to benefit. Drawing, painting, coloring, or creating something simple can help externalize what feels internal. It gives shape to emotions that may feel hard to hold. Sometimes it’s not about what you create, but about the act of creating itself — slowing down, focusing your attention, and allowing space for expression.

Pet therapy brings a different kind of comfort. The presence of an animal can be grounding and soothing. Petting a dog, sitting quietly with an animal, or simply sharing space can lower stress and provide a sense of companionship. Animals respond to presence, not words, which can feel especially meaningful during times when talking feels like too much.

These approaches also support the nervous system in gentle ways. Engaging with music, art, or animals can help shift the body out of overwhelm and into moments of calm and connection. They offer a break from intensity without asking you to step away from your experience.

There is no right or wrong way to engage in expressive therapies. You may find yourself drawn to one more than another, or your needs may change from day to day. What matters is giving yourself permission to explore what feels supportive in the moment.

In hospice care, we recognize that healing and support look different for everyone. Our team can help introduce different approaches, provide guidance, and create space for meaningful expression - for both patients and those who care for them.

You don’t have to find the right words to be supported. Sometimes, expression begins in other ways. And we are here to walk alongside you in whatever form that takes.
